Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, celebrated 2025 Phoenix Awards for brownfield projects for three clients¡ªSt. Philip¡¯s School and Community Center in Dallas, Texas; Oregon State University; and the City of Palmetto, Florida. Ãë²¥ supported these projects with a variety of services, including securing a combined $5.5 million in grant funding.
The practice of brownfields redevelopment brings together Ãë²¥ and organizations from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors across the US to redevelop and reuse valuable property.?The Phoenix Awards recognize exemplary practitioners and brownfields projects that create jobs, increase economic opportunities, and strengthen communities.
¡°It¡¯s an incredible feeling to be able to celebrate our clients and these amazing projects. By working to turn these blighted or underused sites into vibrant community assets, these organizations have changed the lives of thousands of people,¡± said Ben Stewart, senior principal and asset transformation growth leader at Ãë²¥. ¡°We are honored to have played a role in helping our clients turn these ideas into award-winning projects. It¡¯s a testament to the creativity, technical excellence, and dedication of our teams, clients, and partners.¡±
St. Philip¡¯s School Redevelopment Program¡ªDallas, Texas
The St. Philip¡¯s School and Community Center has dedicated itself to revitalizing the Forest District neighborhood in South Dallas¡ªa minority community striving to overcome economic disparities. Through its redevelopment program, the organization transformed the historic campus and neighborhood to better serve students and the surrounding community. This effort includes remediating the contamination of dry-cleaning solvents in six buildings, paving the way for them to become commercial and community spaces. Ãë²¥ helped St. Philip¡¯s secure $1.8 million in Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grants. The Ãë²¥ team also designed and installed the remediation option to improve indoor air quality.
Oregon State University Cascades Campus Development¡ªBend, Oregon
Oregon State University is expanding its Cascades Campus over the course of the next 30 years. The plan calls for the transformation of a former pumice mine and the former Deschutes County demolition landfill. The gradual conversion of 128 acres of blighted land into a thriving campus focuses on building new spaces that support up to 5,000 students while minimizing the impact on the surrounding community. Ãë²¥ supported this project by preparing a successful application for a $2 million EPA Brownfields Cleanup grant.
Connor Park¡ªCity of Palmetto, Florida
Connor Park is an approximately two-acre site formerly operated as a railroad spur and depot to an adjacent railway. The City of Palmetto sought to turn this site into a recreational park connected to its Linear Park Trail system. Ãë²¥ secured $1.7 million in grants to fund the project. The firm supported the City with site assessment of soil contamination and designed a cost-effective solution for remediation to protect human health and the environment. Ãë²¥ also worked with its redevelopment partners, Applied Sciences Consulting and Moore 2 Design Architecture, to design the park, wetland and creek habitat restoration, and stormwater improvements.??
