Archerfield Wetlands District Park
Once a wastewater treatment plant, now a thriving public park, Archerfield Wetlands District Park is part of Brisbane City Council¡¯s Oxley Creek Transformation project. We were engaged to provide civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic engineering services for this project, which reimagines a former industrial site into an environmentally sensitive and community-focused district park.
Designed using natural elements including a eucalyptus forest, grasslands, and wetlands, this parkland features a large adventure playground with water play area, a youth hub with full-sized basketball court, a bush food garden trail and a community lawn for public events.
We provided civil, structural, electrical, and hydraulic engineering services for the design and construction of the park. The site, located on Council-owned land at Bowhill Road, Durack, presented both engineering and environmental challenges¡ªwith high value placed on ecological rehabilitation, flood resilience, and adaptive reuse of the site¡¯s existing infrastructure.
A key feature of the park is the sustainable re-use of elements from the original wastewater treatment facility. These preserved structures now form part of a unique interpretive landscape that blends industrial heritage with public open space, offering visitors a one-of-a-kind experience. The park also includes a short Wetlands Discovery Trail, celebrating the site¡¯s ecological character and supporting environmental education.
The project has been recognized with three AILA Landscape Architecture Awards, including two ¡®Awards of Excellence¡¯ in the ¡®Parks and Open Space¡¯ and ¡®Land Management¡¯ categories, and a ¡®Landscape Architecture¡¯ award in the ¡®Playscape¡¯ category.
Now complete, the park not only restores the natural landscape, but also gives the community a place to connect, play and unwind, bringing new life to a once-forgotten site.
