Pure Water Los Angeles

Only 30 percent of Los Angeles¡¯ current water supply is sourced locally. With such heavy reliance on external water supply sources and impact of climate change on those sources, the City of Los Angels needs to produce locally-source sustainable source of water supply. They established the Pure Water Los Angeles program to help.

In partnership with a major environmental services firm, we¡¯ve been working with the City since 2016 to conduct several technical studies to develop and refine a program implementation plan. We also designed and are currently operating an advanced water treatment (AWT) demonstration facility, which will be used to optimize the design of the full-scale facility and obtain regulatory approval.

The goal of the Pure Water Los Angeles program is to generate up to 230 million gallons per day (MGD) of potable water by treating secondary effluent from Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant, the City¡¯s largest wastewater treatment plant. Instead of secondary effluent that is currently being discharged to the ocean, Hyperion will be converted into a membrane bioreactor-based AWT potable water production facility, making it the largest facility in the world to use this technology for potable reuse.

With reservoirs experiencing historic low levels and climate change negatively impacting water sources like mountain snowpack, the time to act is now. The Pure Water Los Angeles program will play a critical role in enhancing the City of Los Angeles¡¯ climate change resilience and drought resistance.
