When infrastructure is in an earthquake zone, terra firma may not always be firm. Ioannis¡¯ work focuses on earthquake geotechnical engineering, numerical modelling, soil-foundation-structure interactions, and infrastructure. Why is this important? It helps quantify geotechnical risks, guide decisions, and find cost-effective solutions for his clients.
His projects are challenging and highly complex, such as his work with the North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery after the Kaik¨ura Earthquake. This involved mechanically stabilising walls to host the realigned highway, designing a new reclamation and wharf for Port Lyttelton in soft soils and under high seismic demands, and the development of the seismic resilience assessment for Port Nelson.
Ioannis doesn¡¯t shy away from a challenge and is rewarded by his work keeping communities safe, resilient and strong. He doesn¡¯t leave the critical thinking at work, often spending time with friends debating how to solve the problems of the world.
